that shoe thing that happens.

we've all been there, right?
we all have our own story.
the moment of sheer horror when suddenly looking down at your feet.
you knew something didn't feel right.
things seemed off balance.
literally.

only...did your story happen on the way to the optometrist?

aspirations.

i aspire to live my life as though it is being narrated by morgan freeman with a soundtrack by the arctic monkeys.

behind the scenes - EMMA.

while i've been gone, i enjoyed a couple of months in austen-land.
dressing in the regency time period, talking in a british accent, and being a giddy/gullible jane austen character...was really some of the best times i've ever had.

i had the honor of portraying "harriet smith" three nights a week for 4 weeks at the artisan.
i don't know that a character has ever been quite as fun to play as this one.
also...i got to eat SO MUCH FOOD ONSTAGE.
i'm not exaggerating.
they started calling me hungry harriet...or "hungriet."

and the costumes.
let me tell you.
i do think i enjoyed making these costumes the most.
even if that did mean building 15 regency dresses in 2 weeks!

more performance pictures to come...!

hair.

it is a truth universally acknowledged that no one should go TWO YEARS WITHOUT A HAIRCUT.
and yet...guess what i did.

like who does that.

i suppose the long hair will be missed by one and all.
(though the pain will only truly be felt by me)

however, i think this new "do" tells the world:
rebecca is 20...and she's ready for whatever you've got planned.

beth march.

since we last spoke, i had the opportunity of becoming a march sister once more.
"little women, the musical" was last year's holiday show.
this show has been on my dream list ever since i saw it performed 6 years ago.
if you remember, i did have the chance to play jo march in the play version, a few years back.

this time around was a WHOLE new experience.
not only was there new music and dancing...but i played beth march.
the sweetest and best part i've ever had.

the 4 march sisters connected with such a close bond.
it was such an honor to work with each of them.
and grow to love them so very much.

here is a small clip from one of my favorite scenes in the show:

(and here is a link to see a full preview video of the other cast)

so many dear and precious memories for probably the best show i've EVER been a part of.
ever.

real talk.

after living in a small town my whole life, this move to the "big city" has been a bit tricky.
i literally live in a building with a lot of people i don't even know.
sometimes when i'm walking out of my apartment, my neighbor is walking out of his.
our pleasant smile exchanges are merely acknowledgements of "hello strange person i've never met and don't necessarily feel the need to meet but i actually live mere feet from...have a nice day."

another problem that's arisen since "the move"?
i have THE ABSOLUTE WORST LUCK WITH DRIVING.
since "the move" i have:

  • been pulled over.
  • had my car break down.
  • gotten a red light ticket.
  • been in a car wreck.
  • had my car break down. again.
  • gotten a mean note on my windshield wiper concerning my bad parking skills.

apparently driving 2 hours daily to get to work for a year was not acceptable preparation for "big city" living.

but you know what's cool about adult life?
i'm learning to deal with some pretty intense stuff.
like...dealing with broken utilities.
and understanding how to pay bills.
and throwing away phone books and flyers left on the doorstep.

i'm still working on mastering the whole chores thing.
like being in charge of washing dishes and taking out trash and being responsible about the sour milk in the fridge.
i'm not good at that.
my flat mate (what do you call them when you don't share rooms, but an apartment? flat mate sounds so snobbish) does so much better at it and i owe her many a trip to the dumpster.
you don't even want to know how long i left the rotting carved pumpkin by the door after halloween.

but guys...how cool is it that i'm experiencing all of this LIFE?!
sometimes i feel like i'm just playing house and how truly ridiculous it is for me to be out on my own.
i still ignore phone calls half the time because i don't have the courage to talk to people...but i know how to pay bills?
i've been given such a cool opportunity, and it may not be the sort of thing everyone my age is supposed to be doing: college, dorms, classes.
but that's ok.
i love it.

I'M IN A SHOW...again.

so i'm in a show again!
it may not seem like a long time...but it's been MONTHS.
i'm playing lois/bianca in "kiss me kate" at the artisan.
it's a show within a show...basically a 1950's theatre troupe putting on a musical version of "the taming of the shrew."

i wear wigs.
i dance.
i have a new york accent.
all the boys want to marry me.
it's a grand time.

this has most definitely been one of THE most challenging roles i've faced.
there's a lot of belting.
SO much dancing.
and my character is...well...different than my usual type.
and i've LOVED the challenge!

p.s. i'm also in the promo video:

of london dressing rooms and the editor of vogue.

STORY TIME!

once.
when i was in london.
(i really love saying that.)
i was in a vintage clothing shop...trying on a dress in a fitting room.

a lady accidentally walked in on me changing.
(luckily it was winter so i still had about 5 layers of clothing on.)
later, when i was checking out and buying my dress, the owner of the shop pointed to the lady and told me that she's the editor of vogue magazine.

THE vogue magazine.
i later googled "editor of vogue magazine."
guess who popped up?
dressing room intruder lady.

and that's the story about how the editor of vogue magazine walked in on me changing clothes in the dressing room of a vintage clothing shop in london, england.

costume shop life.

i spend most everyday in the costume shop.
also dubbed by others as my "hobbit hole" and "cave."
so apparently people think of me as a bilbo and/or gollum?
sigh.
SHORT PEOPLE PROBLEMS!

my days are full of organizing.
putting costumes away.
sorting through donations.
creating endless amounts of lists.
researching time periods.
pulling costumes.
designing costumes.
making costumes.
doing fittings.
making alterations.
meeting with directors.
managing my budget.

the list is endless.

also...guys...i get a name tag.

so far this year the costume shop has hopped from
the 1980's (footloose).
the the 1920's (thouroughly modern millie).
to the 1940's (the hiding place).
to the 1930's (42nd street).
and now it is taking a drastic LEAP to the 1860's (the civil war)...which i couldn't be more excited about!

a wedding.

i spent the weekend in tennessee being a part of something crazy special.
my best, oldest, dearest friend was married.
MARRIED!!
and i was honored to be the maid of honor in her civil war themed wedding.
it was a totally unique and incredible experience.
and isn't she just the most beautiful bride you've ever seen?

we spent the weekend decorating the wedding venue.
knocking on strangers' houses asking if we could cut off branches of their trees' white blossoms.
doing huge photoshoots.
and just enjoying the last few days together.
*weep*

right before the ceremony, all the girls (her sisters) were upstairs making bouquets.
i finished mine within minutes of walking down the aisle.
close call...but they turned out BEAUTIFUL.
we gave hugs, swallowed our tears, and walked downstairs.
i won't lie...walking down the aisle all alone was absolutely terrifying and felt like it took forever, though my mother says i all but ran.

i remembered to take her bouquet.
gave her his ring at the right moment.
gave her back her bouquet.
and cried the whole way through.
the weather stayed perfect and only began to rain during the reception.
although that didn't stop the dancing and merriment.
my dress, socks, shoes, and petticoat were 6 inches deep in mud, i'm sure.
i looked positively medieval.

i will always treasure these last 6 years with atlanta.
she's been my sister, teacher, confidante, and friend.
there's no one else i quote movies, discuss wives and daughters for hours, communicate via a secret language, have the most absurd adventures, and watch the worst movies with better than with her.
she's the most inspiring and lovely person, inside and out.
and jordan is the luckiest guy in the world.
and that is all i will say about that.

christmas memories.

did i ever tell you about the christmas of 2012?
it was...an eventful day, to say the least.
it started out as many christmases do.
with the opening of presents.
(i got a record player!!!)
and general hubbub.

but to me...the most exciting thing of all was the chance to see LES MISERABLES on opening day!
i mean...i was only waiting for it ALL YEAR!!
so, even though it had started snowing (my second white christmas!) my mom, sister, and i all headed off to the city to see les mis.

it was a beautiful movie.
i laughed, cried, and loved it.
i can't even begin to explain how truly wonderful that movie is.
oh my.
well.
after a terrifyingly scary attempt to get home on the icy roads...it was decided we had to stay the night in town.
christmas night.
in a hotel.

also?
we hadn't eaten any dinner.
and, being christmas, everything was closed.
so christmas dinner was a candy bar, bag of chips, and sprite.
it was a sad...SAD day.

so...the day started off well.
the movie was GLORIOUS.
but the evening...not so much.
:/
just making memories.

end of the world.

from an "end of the world" party i helped plan.
did you party hard december 21st?
we ate delicious scones (and the like).
sang around a campfire.
participated in an epic white elephant gift exchange.
and sat on a trampoline in freezing cold weather laughing about things that probably weren't that funny.

i really love getting together with old friends.

a day in the life.

hello!
oh yes.
i know.
it's been a while.
but i'm back!
huzzah!

so back in november i did an instagram challenge.
basically, take a picture every hour and post it on instagram.
kind of a glimpse into a day in my life.
and now i'm sharing it here!

8am.
waking up in my room is a beauteous sight.
the quilts.
the photos.
the simple, quaintness of my room.
i love it all so very much.

9am.
i don't know about you...but i think leg warmers are kind of the coolest invention ever.
nothing else keeps me quite as warm as a pair of leg warmers.
and they're just about as fashionable as can be.

10am.
every day i spend a total of 2 hours in the car.
driving/riding to and from work.
it's kind of annoying at times...but i may not have to do so much longer.
*secret alert* stay tuned for more.

11am.
the theatre.
my work.
my hobby.

my home away from home.

12pm.
oh chickfila.
there is no place quite like you.
waffle-y fries.
perfectly fried chicken.
sweet tea.
chickfila sauce.
PERFECTION!

1pm.
the costume shop.
some lovely 80's clothing.
(we were in the middle of costuming "footloose.")

2pm.
i'm not going to lie...having a name tag is one of the coolest things.
of all time.
"rebecca roberts.
costumer."
!!!!!

3pm.
remember that time when i was all alone in a sketchy neighborhood working in the costume shop and a strange man walked in and i hid behind a clothes rack and then he left?
ya.
fun times, for sure.

4pm.
i have a fez now.
fezzes are cool.

5pm.
hanging with my friends in the box office.
sitting behind a desk like i actually know how to run the computers.
i don't.

6pm.
stretches before footloose rehearsal.
see that awkward foot just kind of sticking out there.
that belongs to me.
i just pretend i know what i'm doing.

7-10pm.
footloose rehearsals.
because who wouldn't think it's a good idea to be in a show that rehearses during thanksgiving and christmas break and opens on new year's eve?
i think it's a FABULOUS idea.
what else would i do?

11pm.
the long drive home.
it seriously feels longer every day.

and there you have it, my friends!
a view of my epic and exciting life as a costumer.
this is basically my every day (with a little twists and turns here and there).
of course, instead of rehearsals i have shows.
speaking of...oh my goodness...footloose is kind of the coolest show of all time.

it's good to be back!

rebecca jane
